Who won the French Open 2020 in Paris?

Kevin Krawietz and Andreas Mies won the male double. The two Germans defended their title at the French Open. Since 1968 only three other men’s doubles have succeeded in doing so in Roland-Garros. Sixteen months after their initial coup in Roland Garros in 2019, the duo from Coburg and Cologne triumphed again on Saturday, and they defeated Bruno Soares from Brazil and Mate Pavic from Croatia in two sets with 6:3, 7:5.

The women double were won by Kristina Mladenovic from France and the Hungarian Timea Babos. The two women have also defended their title in the women’s doubles at the French Open 2020 and defeated the US-American Desirae Krawczyk and Alexa Guarachi from Chile with 6:4, 7:5. The win in Roland Garros 2020 is the fourth joint Grand Slam title for Babos and Mladenovic. They won in 2019 in Paris as well as in Melbourne at the Australia Open in 2018 and 2020. Unfortunately the double was not allowed to show their game in New York this year at the US Open after Mladenovic was removed from the tournament as she was in contact with the for Corona positively tested Frenchman Benoit Paire.

Iga Swiatek from Poland won the female finals. Iga was the world’s number 54, and let’s be honest no one really expected her to beat the US-American Sofia Kenin 6:4, 6:1, maybe not even Inga herself as she said after the win,  “I am so happy, I don’t even know what’s going on yet.” Inga showed a strong game from the beginning of the French Open, and she did not lose a single set during the entire tournament. After only eight minutes of the match against Kenin, Inga lead already with 3-0. Kenin found her game and also thanks to Inga’s error rate, the American equalized the game. The second set was started by Kenin more openly, but then she had to be treated on her left thigh at the score of 1:2. The Polish player Swiated used that break, found new strength and converted her first match point after one hour and 23 minutes.

And what about the men? Everyone was excited to see who gets the trophy, Nadal or Djokovic? It was a great match to watch under the closed roof of Court Philippe Chatrier and with 1000 spectators allowed in.  Until 2020, the Serbian, Novak Djokovic had only won once in Roland Garros back in 2016. Rafael Nadal from Spain won 12th times in Paris until 2020. So who won this year?

And the winner is, Rafael Nadal. After 2:41 hours of fantastic tennis, Rafa secured his 13th win at Roland Garros and his 20th Grand Slam triumph. Djokovic remains at 17 major titles. Nadal defeated Djokovic with 6:0, 6:2, 7:5. Throughout the whole match, Nadal stayed calm and focused, even though he scored some great balls he did not get too excited. He made only six avoidable mistakes in the first two sets. Djokovic was at the number of 30 at that point. Before the third set, Nadal took a short break and disappeared in changing the dressing room. Once back at the sand court, he continued to show strength. Djokovic continued to counter with power and caught up with a break for the first time in the match. But Nadal was simply too strong.
