Some movement in Formula 1 drivers can be expected as usual. So far, it is officially confirmed that McLaren has signed Lando Norris on a long-term basis.
Other drivers have not that much to celebrate. For example, the Finn, Valtteri Bottas at Mercedes, is under big pressure and needs to prove his seat at Mercedes. The Mercedes contract from Bottas expires at the end of the season.
This season Bottas has only managed three third-place finishes. His last win was at the Russian Grand Prix in 2020. He currently sits in third place with 47 championship points as he scored a zero at Imola due to a collision with George Russell.
When asked in an interview when he would like to know if he can keep on driving for Mercedes and how he deals with the pressure from outside, in particular with George Russell from Williams who wants Bottas’s seat, the Finn said: “To be honest, I haven’t really thought about it at all. That’s the honest answer. I’m focused on the races at the moment.” Bottas also said that he does not want to repeat the past and sign contracts very late in the season as that was a distraction. He “just wants to win races”.
For this reason, he has set himself an initial deadline to sort out his future: “I think the summer break in August is usually a good deadline…”
For now, the Finn wants to focus only on the races and on good results. He is aware that only his performance can secure him a spot at Mercedes.
