The quarter-final pairings of the Europa League are complete, Germany’s North Rhine-Westphalia can look forward to attractive matches. After Manchester United, FC Copenhagen, Inter Milan and Schachtjor Donetsk had secured their tickets for the round of the last eight on last Wednesday, Bayer Leverkusen, FC Sevilla, FC Basel and Wolverhampton Wanderers followed suit on Thursday. Now they are entering the decisive and, due to the Corona pandemic this year, a rather unusual phase. Instead of a first and a second leg, there will only be one match to decide whether which team will enter the semi-finals.
There are no real home games, as all games up to the final on August 21 will be played in NRW. The venues are Cologne, Düsseldorf, Gelsenkirchen and Duisburg. For Leverkusen, which is the last remaining Bundesliga club in the competition after Eintracht Frankfurt and VfL Wolfsburg have been eliminated, this could prove to be at least a small advantage – the surroundings are well-known, and the team does not need to travel long journeys.
