Dominic Thiem won the US Open 2020. The Austrian defeated Alexander Zverev from Germany with 6:2, 6:4, 4:6, 3:6, 6:7 (6:8) in a total of 4:01 hours. Both players showed some great tennis. In the tiebreak, Thiem used his third match point. He is the first player in multiple years to win the title in a final match after being trailing 0:2 sets. It was the tenth duel between Thiem and Zverev and the eighth defeat for the German.
The last time a male US Open winner was not named Nadal, Federer or Djokovic was in 2016. This year in the year of the pandemic, the US Open looked different than usual. Federer and Nadal did not attend the tournament. Federer took a break from tennis following knee surgery. Nadal preferred to get ready for the matches in Europe rather than travelling to the US under the tight Corona schedule and rules. Djokovic did attend the Grand Slam plays in New York but was disqualified in the round of sixteen because he hit a linesman with the tennis ball.
