Naomi Osaka marches to fourth Grand Slam title

The 23-year-old repeated her masterpiece of 2019 in Melbourne, Australia. Naomi Osaka won over American outsider Jennifer Brady with  6:4, 6:3 in the final of the Australian Open 2021 after a nervous start. Osaka gave Brady no chance in the second set and made her fourth Grand Slam title overall perfect. In the partially filled Rod Laver Arena, the favourite Osaka looked very tense in the first set. Osaka started with two aces in the first game and a fast break, but she committed numerous unforced errors on this windy day in Melbourne, Australia. Osaka initially failed to capitalize on a 3:1 lead. After 4:4, however, the match developed in favour of the Japanese, thanks in part to Brady’s errors.

Two days after her semifinal victory over her idol Serena Williams, the 23-year-old did not approach her best form for a long time. However, she improved considerably in the second set, reduced her error rate and quickly led 4:0. She allowed Brady, the world number 24, to win three more games before becoming the successor to last year’s American winner Sofia Kenin.

Brady’s appearance in the final is already highly creditable. She was affected by the strict quarantine before the tournament and was stuck in her hotel room for two weeks. She still achieved the tremendous success of her career.

At her victory speech, Osaka acknowledged Brady’s outstanding performance, “I told everyone at the US Open, she’s going to be a problem.” Brady praised her conqueror, saying, “She’s an inspiration to all of us. It’s incredible what she does for tennis.”

Following the win, Osaka will move from third to second in the world rankings on Monday.

This is Osaka’s fourth title at one of the four most important tournaments. The Japanese won at the US Open in 2018 and 2020 and at the Australian Open two years ago. She can look forward to the prize money of 2.75 million Australian dollars. Naomi Osaka is seen as the future figure in women’s tennis and has star potential for many. Not only because of the outstanding performance at the tennis court but also because she has a clear opinion on socio-political issues, which she shares with the public.
