Australian Open 2021 still unsure

The Australian Open usually take place in January and in the middle of Melbourne, Victoria. However, with the current climate because the Covid-19 pandemic it is still not sure if the tournament will take place and if does, under which circumstances.

Let’s not forget that a second Covid-19 wave badly hit the state Victoria because of which Melbournians were put in a four-month lockdown. The strict measures were just eased at the end of October.

However, to save the Australian tennis summer, there are talks about moving preparation tournaments for the Australian Open to a location near Melbourne. This includes the tournaments in Sydney, Brisbane, Perth, Hobart, Adelaide and Canberra. Craig Tiley the tournament director hopes that this plan will be considered Covid safe and will allow the players to move freely in the state of Victoria after entry and a two-week quarantine in which they will be allowed to train. It is not sure though if Tiley’s hope will become reality. Dan Andrews, Prime Minister of the State of Victoria, warned against too much euphoria about the Grand Slam highlight. He said, “the Australian Open is a massive event, one that we all love, but which is taking place at a time when the world is on fire. Avoiding a third wave is probably even more important”.

So for now it is, wait and see.
