As announced by the organisers of the ASB Classic, the tournament which was supposed to take place in January 2021 won’t be happening because of Covid-19.
According to the public statement, there seem to be too many uncertainties to continue planning the tournaments. The ASB Classic usually takes place just before the Australian Open, the first Grand Slam tournament of the year which is held in Melbourne. With the current uncertainty around the coronavirus and the way the New Zealand is handling the pandemic, it might be a wise decision to cancel the tournament. Let’s not forget that the New Zealand borders are closed for all non-New Zealanders and that the politicians don’t mind to put a city in lockdown if new Corona cases arise. You might not have known, but Auckland, a city of 1.6 million people and a hub of commerce, was put into an initial three-day lockdown when after a 102-day COVID-free run, four people were tested positive to corona.
