An exciting match between Nick Kyrgios and Dominic Thiem

It was easy to see who was the winner for the audience in Melbourne. Kyrgios had the crowd behind him, they cheered and they kept him going when he wanted it. As usual, Kyrgios got into a spat with the chair umpire.

In the end, all of Kyrgios’s drama, his hits from underneath and strong first serves were not enough and the US Open 2020 number one from Austria, Dominic Thiem defeated the Australian with a 4:6, 4:6, 6:3, 6:4, 6:4  in an entertaining match. Kyrgios, who had already gone through five sets in the second round, had a long sniff at the biggest surprise of the tournament so far. In the end, however, he ran out of steam. In a match lasting 3:21 hours, Thiem showed a Grand Slam winner’s nerves against the extroverted athlete from Canberra, who is always the subject of controversy on the scene.

Novak Djokovic, the world number one, almost did not make it through the round of 16 as he was physically struggling a lot. In the end, he put all his strength together and won over the American Taylor Fritz with  7:6 (7:1), 6:4, 3:6, 4:6, 6:2. Novak Djokovic had received multiple abdominal treatments.

The match took passed midnight and because of the 5-day lockdown starting on February 13th at 0:00 all spectators had to leave the arena.

Djokovic is aiming for his ninth title win in Melbourne and his 18th Grand Slam triumph overall. If Djokovic overcomes his physical challenges and wins the AO, he can close the gap on major record champions Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer, who won 20 times so far.
