There are lots of discussions around the US Open and about how the Grand Slam tournament might look like this year. Stacey Allaster, who is responsible for professional tennis in the US Tennis Federation, said in an interview with Associated Press, that the goal is to hold the tournament in the usual location, the Billie Jean King Center in New York, on the planned date. However, the whole organisation of the US Open needs to be amended in times of Corona. This involves the travel of the tennis players, as well as ghost games as no audience, will be allowed. The players might be flown to New York from several airports around the world on charter flights specially hired for the purpose. Before departure, all participants would also have to present a negative COVID-19 test. The players won’t be able to bring all their support staff.
Stacey Allaster made clear in the interview that these are all just possibilities and that no final decisions have yet been made. An official announcement including details on the event can be expected “mid to late June”, Allaster said.
